# Perplexity

Real-time web search, web-grounded answers and research for agents and apps.

Perplexity's API platform brings real-time, web-wide research and Q&A to your
products. The Search API returns ranked web results; the Agent API answers and
researches with web search using models from several providers; the Router and
Embeddings APIs cover open-weight models and embeddings. Sonar Chat Completions
was replaced by the Agent API and reached its end of support on September 27,
2026.

The hosted MCP server offers `perplexity_search`, `perplexity_ask`,
`perplexity_research` and `perplexity_reason`. It signs in with your Perplexity
account and bills tool calls to the API organization you pick, which you must
administer. The `pplx` CLI returns Search API results and page snippets as
JSON.

## Tools

- tool:perplexity/ask-question — Ask a question: Answers a question from current web sources with inline citations, tuned for quick facts and short summaries.
- tool:perplexity/deep-research — Run deep research: Researches a question across many web sources with extended reasoning and returns a thorough answer with citations.
- tool:perplexity/get-page-snippets — Get page snippets: Returns only the passages of one or more web pages that are relevant to a query, as JSON.
- tool:perplexity/search-people — Search for people: Returns web results about professionals who match a name, role, company or location, with titles, URLs and snippets naming their jobs and employers.
- tool:perplexity/search-web — Search the web: Returns ranked web results for a query, each with its title, URL, snippet and dates, optionally limited to domains or a date range.
