# Exa

Web search for AI agents, with page contents, cited answers, monitors and a research agent.

Exa is a web search engine built for AI agents. Its API searches the web in
natural language, with categories for company pages and people profiles,
returns clean page contents, answers questions with citations, reruns
searches on a schedule as monitors, and runs Exa Agent for multi-step
research, list building and enrichment with structured output.

The hosted MCP server also works without a key at free rate limits. Signing
in with OAuth (the `?login` URL) uses your team's plan and turns on
`agent_run`; a client without OAuth can send an API key in the `x-api-key`
header instead. The API takes the key as a Bearer token or in `x-api-key`.
Usage is pay-as-you-go, and new accounts start with free credits.

## Tools

- tool:exa/answer-question — Answer a question from the web: Searches the web for a question and returns a direct answer or a summary with citations, or JSON that matches an output schema.
- tool:exa/create-monitor — Monitor the web for new results: Creates a monitor that reruns an Exa search on a schedule and sends only new, deduplicated results to your webhook.
- tool:exa/get-page-contents — Read web pages: Returns clean text, the most relevant highlights or a summary for one or more known URLs, from Exa's cache or a fresh crawl.
- tool:exa/run-agent — Run a list-building and research agent: Starts an Exa Agent run that searches and reads the web to build lists, enrich records you pass in or research a question, and returns cited findings with optional schema-validated JSON.
- tool:exa/search-web — Search the web: Returns web pages that match a natural-language query, up to 100 per call, with their text, highlights or summaries, and can focus on company pages, people profiles or news.
